Travelling across Scandinavia you become accustomed to their attention to detail when putting together delicious breakfast snacks and lunchtime treats which are all packed with flavour. There’s a real effort to seek out ingredients which make for a simple yet rich and tasty meal.
That desire to create straightforward food which is a real joy to eat is captured perfectly by Nordic Bakery which has opened four branches across London. We visited their outlet on the edge of Covent Garden, where we worked up an appetite watching the street entertainers performing incredible feats from the top of seven feet high unicycles.
I love how the tradition of street entertainment has continued for hundreds of years here and the streets still bustle with acts drawing big crowds to see comedy, music and magic.
Away from the crowds on the relatively quiet of Neal Street the Nordic Bakery has recreated a Scandinavian-style cafe experience with a huge range of different pastries, cakes, buns and rye bread sandwiches.
Everything here is based on Nordic recipes, coupled with authentic scandi-ingredients.
The smell of delicious rye and sweet aromas filled the air as we stepped inside, with hearty cinnamon buns and hot coffee looking and smelling so tempting.
We started with some of the Nordic Bakery’s sandwiches made on dark rye flat rolls, each of which came with scandivanian inspired fillings such as Jarlsberg cheese and pickled gherkins and smoked salmon with dill and black pepper.
My children also loved their rolls filled with Somerset brie and lingonberry jam which they absolutely devoured.
A huge leafy green salad with hot smoked salmon was perfect for those who wanted to try something a little different.
Their generous collection of cakes and buns keep the authentic flavours coming starting with their cinnamon bun which is based on a Finnish version and is lovely and rustic – packed with flavour.
There’s also a host of different scandi-style buns available including Skoleboller, popular in Norway and filled with custard and a really tasty blueberry upside down cake.
We finished with the perfect coffees, refreshed and ready to stroll back into the crowds of Covent Garden, filled with memories of our trips to Scandinavia and the most delicious lunch.
