While the UK might still be bathed in a sea of grey, Portugal is feeling much sunnier. We had a wonderful weekend in Lisbon recently, taking in castles, custard tarts, trams and tackling plenty of hills. It’s one of our favourite cities, it’s got such a cool vibe about it. So Lisbon seemed the perfect place to try out the latest collection of clothes from Raspberry Republic.
Raspberry Republic are a fun Polish brand which has more than a touch of the Scandi style we absolutely love (half of the company has Swedish roots so this seems only natural). Their collections are colourful and creative and are all about kids having fun too. They use organic cotton and their pieces are made locally to them in Poland ensuring they can maintain fair working conditions. And we love them.
The latest collection for SS18 is great as most of it is works for boys and girls meaning it will be perfect to pass on. My daughter loved the carrot crunch leggings (with a fun pattern of bunnies, strawberries and carrots) which we paired with the Aladdin’s lamp t-shirt. It was perfect for racing about the streets, discovering plazas and plenty of art, museums and great independent shops to browse in.
Lisbon is a great city to explore as a family. So much of the capital’s history is still celebrated despite being devastated in the 18th century by a huge earthquake. From discovering part of the ancient city wall in the lower levels of our hotel through to the vast Castelo de Sao Jorge which overlooks central Lisbon, it’s not hard to find places to help bring the city and the country’s heritage alive for children.
There’s a great metro system across much of Lisbon, and tram lines running in seemingly every direction – perfect to get you around quickly to all of the sights and to save tired legs, but this is still a city which is really lovely to explore on foot. From twisting hill climbs to long promenades and city squares Lisbon is well worth taking a morning stroll through. Our nine-year old loved pulling on the comfortable Raspberry Republic, soft cotton clothes to get out exploring.
She absolutely loves these Pharaoh Popsicle leggings which have a fun design of pharaohs eating popsicles, what else?! Paired with another of the Aladdin’s lamp t-shirts, this time with a standard cut, it was the perfect combination for the Portuguese spring sunshine.
Lisbon’s relationship with the sea is never far from your mind as you explore the city streets and the River Tagus which brought explorers and traders into the capital for centuries is still very present, as you stroll the wide promenades and the streets they give way to the waters. When we arrived the wind had picked up and was whipping up white horses on the water’s surface. When we headed out the next day in the spring sunshine it was a completely different matter – the river seemed so calm and peaceful disappearing off out to the Atlantic under the massive 25 de Abril suspension bridge. It was a great day to take in the chilled Lisbon lifestyle, for the adults to grab a quick coffee from the street cafes and perhaps that last pastel de nata to keep a spring in our steps.
