Throw your hands up and bounce! The Shindig Weekender festival is back in Bruton, Somerset from 26th – 28th May and this year it’s bigger than ever before. It’s going to be a weekend packed full of family fun, huge headline acts and fabulous food.
Now in its fourth year, Shindig started life as a party for the friends and family of the Ghetto Funk record label. It has grown year on year and the Shindig creators have crafted their perfect festival bringing together all the parts that they loved about other festivals and mixing them together to create something truly special.
On their website Shindig names the family atmosphere as an important part of what makes their festival so special. The Kids Kingdom is the family friendly area for babies, children and parents to hang out, hone their circus skills and build sandcastles. There’s also a Graffiti Wall; DJ, MCing and Breakdance workshops for the older kids; a mini rave; a cinema tent and a myriad of arts and crafts activities all in preparation for a Sunday parade. We have many handmade treasures carefully carried back from festivals we have been to, it’s great to be able to come home with a lasting reminder of the weekend that isn’t just a piece of merchandising.
With no main stage, the festival site is split into eight different areas meaning you have the choice of diving into a marquee to see something special or lounging in the grass in among it all. But don’t let the fact they don’t have a main stage fool you, there are some pretty legendary names heading the bill – The Heavy, The Sugarhill Gang & Furious 5, Stanton Warriors and Laid Blak to name just a few.
Shindig also has a whole host of fresh treats lined up for this year so even if you’ve been before, this year there will be something new for you too. Added to the line up for 2017 are the SS Nautylicious circus shows, the Stardust Discotheque, Father Funk’s Church of love, Fabio & Grooverider’s celebration of 25 years of Drum and Bass, a 90s rave day and a Healing field. With so much going on it’s going to be a hard task to pick where to explore first but I know that our ten year old will not want to miss out on catching some of the circus shows once he’s ready to leave the Kids Kingdom.
Last but by no means least there’s something else that we are all looking forward to – the food! We’re a food loving family and knowing that Love Food Festival is curating the food stalls, all of which will be selling food sourced as locally as possible and with plenty of veggie options, is a definite bonus because as much as cooking up breakfast on the camping stove is fun, by the time it gets round to an evening meal we all want something warm and filling (with no washing up!).
This year’s theme is Vibe Tribe – think shiny happy, wonderfully psychedelic, funky warrior families, and possibly the best bit of all is that a weekend ticket isn’t going to cost you a fortune. Adult tickets are £99 and children under 12 go free, teen (13-17) tickets are £50, and family (2+2) are £250. All can be bought from: http://shindig-events.co.uk/
