We visited the Omni Amelia Island Resort as part of our trip through Florida and Georgia but it would make the perfect weekend break from Orlando, being just a few hours north of the city but a world apart. I should tell you all the things we did on Amelia Island but the truth is our stay at the Omni was right at the end of our travels and we got to the resort, saw all the amazing facilities, the beach and the pools and decided to stay put and really relax.
The perfect weekend break from Orlando – Omni Amelia Island Resort, Florida
The Omni is set on the southern end of Amelia Island which is a mid-sized Island with plenty going on and lots of restaurants and supermarkets. We thought it was the perfect size as we could order up food or pick up supplies from the supermarket on the island without being subjected to small island prices.
The Omni itself is a huge resort and has numerous parts to it including the hotel at the centre. We stayed in one of their Shipwatch Villas, set a few hundred yards down the road. We were a bit disappointed at first glance as we expected a villa to be its own little building when the Shipwatch ‘villas’ are in an apartment block, however once inside it was all forgiven.
Shipwatch Villas – Omni Amelia Island Resort – Sleeps:
Our ‘villa’ was a three bed apartment which consisted of two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom.
My ten-year old son said his bed was the most comfortable he had slept on.
We also had three bathrooms, two en suite and one family bathroom. These felt really spacious, with lovely rainforest style showers, a jacuzzi bath and some lovely products.
We had one large open plan living space which consisted of a really well equipped kitchen.
A lounge with television and plenty of space to relax.
A dining area with an additional small kitchen space.
We loved the little extra touches like board games to play and a washer and tumbler dryer. There was everything we needed for a long stay and actually I wouldn’t have minded moving in.
There were two balconies, a small one off of the master bedroom and a large one at the front where we could sit out with our breakfast and watch the sun coming up over the ocean.
It was a lovely space and we threw open the doors on a number of occasions so we could hear the sound of the sea hitting the shore.
Shipwatch Villas – Omni Amelia Island Resort – Food:
We didn’t eat on the resort but there are plenty of restaurants with quick eats through to full sit down meals. There’s also a shop but we didn’t find it particularly useful for supplies and pretty expensive anyway so we headed for the Publix down the road to stock up on groceries and cooked up a storm in our lovely kitchen.
Shipwatch Villas – Omni Amelia Island Resort – The Best Bits:
We absolutely loved this villa, the space it gave us, the gorgeous features and how well it was kitted out. We really enjoyed walking out the back of the building and down on to the beach which was perfect for shell hunting and sandcastle building.
You are free to use all of the facilities of the main Omni building but there is also a pool at the Shipwatch villas which we loved. We spent whole mornings here just splashing about and having fun and were usually the only people in it when we visited at the beginning of November.
Shipwatch Villas – Omni Amelia Island Resort – Worth Bearing in Mind:
If you’re staying in a villa it would be worth checking where it is on the resort as some of the locations seemed to be a long way out which may or may not suit you. There is a free resort bus which takes you around the different locations which we didn’t use but could be handy.
Shipwatch Villas – Omni Amelia Island Resort – Child Friendly?
The Omni is very family friendly from the space in the villa to the wonderful facilities. The children loved the welcome packs they got when we checked in and the lovely bucket and spades left for them in the room.
There’s plenty to do at the Omni if you’re feeling energetic, from golf to cycling but we were happy to chill out by the pools and beach.
This is such a lovely stretch of coastline and provided the perfect opportunity for us to all relax and have some really lovely, quality family time at the end of our trip.
