There’s nothing better than Britain when the sun is shining and summer is in full flow. I love the countryside, the beautiful colours and the feel of long, wistful days. We started our holidays with a weekend of summer fun and family activities in the New Forest with kids and it was the perfect way to get it all off to a great start.
I love the New Forest, it’s such a gorgeous part of the UK with stunning scenery. We have visited the New Forest before but never in summer and this felt like the perfect time to indulge in this lovely part of the world.
The whole area has a timeless quality, its towns and villages are reminiscent of an England long ago – not in a twee way – but of a time when life was simpler and all the better for it. There’s so much space here that you can simply walk, cycle or explore a forest park and forget about mobile phones, ipads and work, and enjoy getting out and about.
We stayed at the Balmer Lawn Hotel south of Lyndhurst which had an indoor and outdoor pool so we spent plenty of time here, just hanging out in the sunshine, the kids happily splashing about in the water.
We ventured out to the blissful village of Beaulieu (literally meaning ‘beautiful place’) on one of the days to hire bikes. Our oldest two children are just getting in to cycling and I love it so it felt wonderful to feel the warm breeze in my hair as we cycled along the Beaulieu river. There are numerous cycle paths here and lots of signs along them explaining all the different wildlife that you might pass.
We made our way to the bottom of the river where New Forest Activities have another site renting out Canadian canoes which are perfect for families as three can sit in one.
We all headed out in our canoes, a group of just nine (including the Globalmouse five) and one instructor for a wonderful trip up the river towards Beaulieu town.
The paddling was so easy on the way up and we stopped to have lots of wildlife sights pointed out to us.
One of all of our highlights was being able to pick up jellyfish. The jellies here are a particular species that don’t sting and as dozens of them were floating past us we were shown how to carefully pick them up which the children thought was the best thing ever. (We loved the instructor’s five second rule by which time they had to be gently returned).
We also got to eat sea asparagus, picked straight from the river bank which were really tasty.
With the sun on our cheeks it really felt so lovely to be paddling up the water, the perfect summer activity, so happy and free.
We headed back to the Balmer Lawn at the end of a busy, activity filled day, ready for a quick dip in the pool before a long, happy sleep.
We loved our weekend of summer fun and family activities in the New Forest with kids, time together as a family enjoying the beautiful countryside. It was so nice to drive out and discover new bits of the park which we hadn’t come across before.
On our final day we headed out towards Romsey for a lovely Sunday lunch at Keats Restaurant. It was the perfect setting to all talk about our favourite things of the weekend, from jellyfish handling to Balmer Lawn’s lovely hotel breakfasts it was so nice to sit down over a great meal and chat. We tucked into goats cheese and vegetable tarts, tasty salmon fillets and delicious Sunday roast veggies followed by some amazing desserts.
Our weekend of summer fun and family activities in the New Forest with kids really was the perfect way to get the summer off to a great start.
We were guests of the New Forest area for our weekend of summer fun and family activities in the New Forest with kids but all opinions are our own.
