Rotterdam is a cool city. Pretty much obliterated in the Second World War it was rebuilt with quirky architecture and a can-do attitude and is full of fun, cool places to eat and drink. It’s very different from the other Dutch cities and interesting because of it. We really love Rotterdam, it feels fun and different. We visited on our summer trip to the Netherlands and on our first night in the city headed out for cool vibes and good food at Supermercado, Rotterdam.
Supermercado is one of those restaurants you can really relax in. Whether you’re heading out as a couple for a romantic meal, a group of friends out for cocktails and fun or a family of five like us, there’s space for everyone and no one feels like they’re stepping on anyone’s toes.
I love Supermercado’s menu which is full of small plates and main dishes and you can order as much or as little as you like and all dig in to share. This is such a great way to eat with kids as it means you don’t have to order one dish for them and worry about whether they’ll eat it, you can order lots of different food for them to try.
We ordered lots of their smaller dishes and the table was heaving under all the food.
From delicious nachos piled up with jalapenos, sour cream, cheese, salsa, guacamole and spring onions to some tasty corn on the cob smothered in chipotle mayo and feta cheese.
We loved the salty, sweet padrón peppers which were so delicious and moreish.
The lentil tacos were a little dry but I am a massive taco fan so gobbled them up.
The kids loved the sweet potato fries, bean and corn empanadas and quesadillas.
Mr GM had a grilled salmon all to himself which he really enjoyed but wished it had more of a spicy South American hit to it.
In all it was a really good meal and we really enjoyed it. The children loved that near to the table was a play area for them to enjoy while we chatted and sipped grapefruit sodas.
We finished the meal with churros, and grilled tortillas with nutella and ice cream (which the kids thought were the best things ever) and strong coffee.
We loved our meal at Supermercado, it was the perfect place to chill out as a family, to chat the evening away with good food and a wonderful setting.
We were guests of Supermercado, Rotterdam but all opinions are our own.
