Utrecht is our favourite city in the Netherlands, it has it all – beautiful canalside walks, a wonderful old town packed full of history and character and lots going on for families no matter what the weather. We were so happy to return to Utrecht on our summer trip around the Netherlands and couldn’t wait to relax on the outskirts of the city. This is our review of Hotel Mitland which when you’re looking for a family stay in Utrecht is a great base.
A family stay in Utrecht – a review of Hotel Mitland – Hotel and Location:
Hotel Mitland is slightly out of the city and surrounded by countryside. Many of the rooms overlook the beautiful old Fort de Bilt and also the parkland. There’s a lovely canal that Hotel Mitland also backs on to which is perfect for watching the ducks and just so relaxing. We found it the perfect calm to the city whilst still being very close in order to get in and see the sights. It’s also really close to the motorway to get in to Amsterdam which is about 45 minutes away so easy to use Hotel Mitland as a base to visit the capital.
There are 141 rooms and suites and also an indoor pool with sauna and amazingly the hotel has its own bowling centre.
We were most impressed when we arrived to find that the England women’s football team stayed at Hotel Mitland for three weeks and the lovely receptionist gave us some of their memorabilia when he heard that we were a fan which was such a sweet touch.
A review of Hotel Mitland – Sleeps:
We stayed in one of Hotel Mitland’s family rooms which is a great space when you’re travelling with kids. Our suit had a main master bedroom with a television –
A separate lounge area with large desk which then had the children’s beds in. They also had their own television in this room which they thought was great.
The rooms were all free-flowing in to each other but there was a divider you could pull across which was great in the evening when we were getting them off to sleep so we could sit in our room with the television down low.
The bathroom was a really nice size with a powerful shower which is always a bonus.
We had a small balcony we could sit out and watch the ducks and swans on the canal below which was lovely in the sunny evenings.
It was a really nice space to come back and relax after a day out exploring.
A review of Hotel Mitland – Food:
We didn’t eat dinner at Hotel Mitland but we did have their breakfast which was a really good spread of pastries, cheeses and meats, cereals, fresh juices and a small selection of hot dishes. The children were really happy to see small boxes of the sprinkles that are a Netherlands staple to put on toast for breakfast.
We ate well at breakfast at the hotel and enjoyed going.
A review of Hotel Mitland – The Best Bits:
We really loved the tranquility of Hotel Mitland, it was a nice space to come back to and really relax in the evening, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
It was great to have use of the swimming pool here which was perfect for the children to have a splash about and have some fun.
We absolutely loved the bowling centre. You can book out a lane and the centre is perfectly kitted out with shoes for every member of the family. You can order drinks to your booth and there’s music playing and it’s a really fun setting. We loved it.
A review of Hotel Mitland – Worth Bearing in Mind:
To get in to Utrecht it is probably not walking distance and as the city isn’t particularly friendly for cars it’s best to leave this at the hotel too. There is public transport available or you can hire bikes at the hotel to cycle in.
A review of Hotel Mitland – Child Friendly?
We thought this was a great hotel for staying with kids, there was space to relax in the family rooms and the facilities were great to be able to use.
