Dubrovnik Aquarium – great things to do in Dubrovnik with kids
Around the harbour, past the Rector’s Palace and at the St John’s Fortress is the city’s aquarium. While certainly not large it is set in the old fortress and a perfect place to escape some of the crowds and also the heat of the city.
And it is full of fish indigenous to Croatia. It has also just been renovated.
Zipline over the city
Children over eight years old will love this experience.
Take to the skies and soar down from Mount Srdj. This combines nature, history and fun. You will also get proper zipline training.
This is a really memorable experience and a great way to see Dubrovnik.

Bubblemaker Experience for Kids in Dubrovnik
This two hour bubblemaker experience is ideal for children aged from ages eight to 10.
Get them to experience diving and learn basic diving skills all under the supervision of an experienced instructor. Where could be more beautiful as a first taster of diving for kids?

Traditional Dalmatian Cooking Class
For another really memorable experience why not take part in a traditional Dalmatian Cooking class? This would suit older children with an interest in cookery.
Spend the day on a country estate cooking traditional dishes like “peka” and then get to enjoy the meal afterwards (with wine for the adults).

Stradun – the main street
One of the first places you will come across in Dubrovnik is the main street, the Stradun.
This is completely pedestrianised and full of beautiful music from street entertainers. It’s also packed full of ice cream sellers and gift shops.
Full of history this street is just so beautiful to look at.
We walked all the way through to the Rector’s Palace at the side of the main square. Here there are lovely little architectural details like these brilliant water spouts on the wall of St Blaise Church.
The Rector’s Palace, Dubrovnik
The Rector’s Palace was built in the 15th Century. Full of pictures and statues from Dubrovnik’s past and a wonderful atrium at its centre it is used for summer concerts and festivals.
Also nearby and behind the aquarium you can sit on the harbour walls and watch the fishermen and women come in with their daily catch.
The gorgeous turquoise waters beyond the ancient walls are also a wonderful spot to enjoy.
Walk the city walls in Dubrovnik with kids
One of our favourite things to do with kids in Dubrovnik is to walk the city walls. There’s a small charge payable here to do it.
Built from the 12th century onwards, these walls embrace the old town of Dubrovnik and are a wonderful place to look down on the city. The views of red-tiled roofs are beautiful as is seeing the city in all of its splendour.
You get a different perspective from the tops of the walls. We loved seeing the canons and the views out across the city.
You can walk all around the city walls or come off at one of the many gates dotted along.
This is such an atmospheric and interesting thing to do. And kids will love it too.
Old Town History Outdoor Escape Game
Why not try out an outdoor escape room for something a bit different? Solve puzzles, riddles and missions to help save the Dubrovnik Republic.

Franciscan Monestry
The Franciscan monastery which was built in 1317, is a wonderful, calm, cool space. It’s a really nice place to visit with kids.
Here you can also see the Friars Minor pharmacy – the world’s third oldest pharmacy (also established in 1317). It is full of old bottles and implements.
The monastery was a lovely soothing space. Just sitting under the grapefruit tree and relaxing a while after all the walking is wonderful.
Seeing Dubrovnik by sea
The coastline around Dubrovnik is beautiful. Getting into the water can be a lovely way to see the city.

Get out and about and visit the most secluded beaches and caves on Croatia’s coastline. Leave Dubrovnik’s old town on a catamaran cruise with snacks, drinks, swimming, and snorkelling. Great for more confident swimmers.

If you’re spending any amount of time in Dubrovnik you may want to consider a day trip out. There are a number of places you can get to easily.
Montenegro
Montenegro is a really short trip from Dubrovnik. You can easily get a taste of it in a day and there are companies (see the link below) who can pick you up and drop you back.
On this trip you can have free time in the beautiful towns of Perast, and Budva, and embark on a sightseeing ferry across the Boka Kotorska Bay. A wonderful experience for children to experience a new country.

Visiting Dubrovnik with kids – our conclusion and getting there
We fell in love with Dubrovnik. Its sparkling seas and beautiful old town which was so well preserved – it is just gorgeous.
This looks like a gorgeous place to visit. It’s great to see there is lots to keep the children interested too.
There really is, they loved Dubrovnik – it felt like being in a real life castle being able to walk on top of the walls!

Dubrovnik is definitely on our bucket list, but I was leaving for a year or two because of the kids. Reading this- It’s actually quite a good destination with kids.
If you get the chance to visit then go for it – it really is very family friendly and perfect for children – our 2 year old loved it as much as our 7 year old. Let me know if you make it there!
