Bunte Burger Cologne – fabulous vegan and vegetarian fast food. Cologne is a city filled with intriguing and thriving cultural areas. While the centre offers a host of attractions for tourists and visitors, delving deeper into Cologne is even more rewarding. The trendy, culturally-hip and lively area of Cologne-Ehrenfeld is filled with impressive street art, playgrounds and a cool vibe which you can feel in the air as you walk through the streets. Its cafes and restaurants offer something different too and one of the best offerings in Cologne-Ehrenfeld is Bunte Burger, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant which serves up satisfyingly tasty, and different, burgers. We checked it out on our trip to Cologne and Bonn with kids and wished we were in the city longer to visit time and time again.

The menu
The restaurant’s menu is made up of a great selection of starters, veggie bowls, burgers and sides, all of which are creatively constructed from plant based products.
Bunte Burger prides itself on offering food which is naturally organic, sourced from the region and sustainable. As well as being ‘gourmet’ with the restaurant being ranked in the top 250 in the country, which is no small feat for a small and thriving outlet.
Bunte Burger’s vibe is decidedly low key and relaxing, with a chilled atmosphere and lots of lovely quirky art and design to enjoy as you tuck into your food.

The starters include a vegan nachos dish, chickin skewers with a teriyaki dressing and tasty and creative salads.
Burgers
Naturally it’s the line up of nine different burgers which is the real stand out on the menu, with creations which include Don Corleone Italo Burger and a Pulled Jack BBQ Burger.Â
My eldest loved the special which included a Beyond Meat burger and was absolutely heaving with tasty ingredients.
My generously sized American Club Style Burger featured homemade ‘bacon’ from Portobello mushrooms, lettuce, avocado and caramelized onions with a ‘chickin’ patty and was so good.
Each of the burgers features its own patty, suiting the particular burger style.
Sides
Accompanying them are a tasty selection of sides including sweet potato fries and fries with chili cheeze with Jalapeños.
Mr G picked out the truffle fries and these were a real hit, punchy and full of flavour.
The restaurant’s food credentials are to be congratulated and this is a really good example of a location which has been able to successfully secure regional organic food sustainably and deliver some really tasty options.

There’s a kids menu too with either a burger or a selection of chickin nuggets and fries to enjoy.
I thought the nuggets plate was a little on the small side, especially as the meals are meant to be suitable for up to age 14. But my children enjoyed their meals nevertheless.
Indeed I really like their attitude towards kids too with a dedicated play space, complete with activities and toys which younger children will enjoy.
Bunte Burger has a well deserved reputation as a great restaurant for vegetarians and vegans. It’s certainly well worth seeking out and getting of the beaten tourist track in Cologne to enjoy the food on offer, even if you’re not on a plant based diet.
This was our favourite restaurant on our trip to Germany, packed full of flavour with a really cool laid back vibe and a mission to make a difference.
My hope is they’re going to spread and build into an international chain soon.

As a vegetarian, this is a really great post to see – it can be hard to know the best places for veggie food when travelling 🙂
Reading this had made me so hungry. I’m a lactose intolerant veggie, so I often eat vegan because it’s easier. It’s so great to see good restaurants like this in Europe. The last time I was in that area was nearly 20 years ago and the options were very few indeed.
