Our guide to Bonn with kids: About Bonn
Bonn is a beautiful city, nudging up against the Rhine in western Germany. It is close to Cologne with only about 19 miles between them.
The city was once the capital of West Germany but after the country reunified the capital moved to Berlin in 1991.
It’s a great city to wander through, with lots of glimpses of old Germany in the streets. And there is a fantastic public transport system to get you around.

Our guide to Bonn for children: Where to visit
Bonn is an easy city to navigate with great public transport options across it.
The city centre is small with the main shops centred around The Old Town Hall in the square.
From here it’s an easy walk to Beethoven’s birthplace which is a sweet little house to wander through, situated on Bonngasse.
Children will love the opportunity to stop off in the Haribo shop in the centre (Haribo was founded in the city in 1920).
Outside of the city the Freizeitpark Rheinaue is a beautiful park and perfect for a visit with kids on a sunny day. Out in the same direction is the Haribo factory shop if you haven’t had enough of the sweet stuff.

Daytrips from Bonn: Where to go
One of our favourite day trips from Bonn was to the pretty town of Königswinter. Which is easily reached on the U-Bahn out of the city and only about a 15 minute ride, largely alongside the Rhine.
Königswinter is beautiful with traditional German houses in the centre.
From here you can walk up to the spectacular Schloss Drachenburg. A fairytale like castle full of secrets.

Our guide to Bonn with kids: Where to eat
If you’re looking for cheap eats there are plenty in Bonn.
There are bakeries all over the town selling delicious sweet and savoury buns, there are plenty of sausages to buy from street sellers (although sadly none we found were vegetarian). And there is a popular fish and chips stall, Nordsee which is a chain across Germany.
There are a number of other restaurants across Bonn.

There are very few specific souvenir shops in Bonn that kids will enjoy but on our trip to the Haribo shop the children picked up keyrings and some little gummy models that they loved.

It’s worth picking up a family travel card for the underground in Bonn, these can be cheaper than a single ticket.
The Airport Express bus leaves every half-hour (hourly on Sundays) and takes you right in to the centre of Bonn.
