Our review of the Atlantic Restaurant Funchal, Madeira: Sometimes everything comes together to create a really special family moment. It’s a specific set of ingredients that can allow a meal to be something wonderful. Great food, fantastic service, perfect setting, non-bickering children, happy parents.
Amazingly, everything came together when we went out to dinner at the Atlantic Restaurant Funchal on our winter trip to Madeira. We had such a lovely meal here, it was our favourite on the island.
Madeira is known for its dramatic coastline, volcanic landscapes and incredible Atlantic views, but it is also increasingly recognised for its food scene. Funchal, the island’s capital, blends traditional Madeiran dishes with modern Portuguese cuisine, and the Atlantic Restaurant captures that balance beautifully. Location of the Atlantic Restaurant Madeira
The Atlantic Restaurant, Madeira is just on the outskirts of Funchal. Perched along the Atlantic coastline, the restaurant makes the most of Madeira’s natural beauty. The terrace looks directly out over the ocean, and as the evening light begins to soften, the whole setting feels golden and calm. Madeira has long been a stopping point for explorers and traders crossing the Atlantic, and sitting here watching the waves roll in, you can’t help but feel connected to that history.
The staff here are just wonderful, full of Madeiran warmth and so welcoming. This is not a stuffy, inaccessible restaurant, it’s just lovely and the food is fantastic.
Madeiran hospitality is something visitors often comment on, and we experienced it first-hand here. The service was attentive without ever feeling formal, and the staff were genuinely warm with the children. It’s always such a relief to find a restaurant where families are made to feel comfortable rather than tolerated.
Starters – Atlantic Restaurant Funchal, Madeira – A review
My starter was wonderful. Chargrilled courgette on bruschetta with a regional cottage cheese, called requeijão, a soft Portuguese cheese often made locally in Madeira. It added a creamy contrast to the smoky chargrilled courgette and crisp bruschetta. The dish felt simple but thoughtfully prepared, showcasing fresh local ingredients rather than over-complicating the flavours.
It was light, Mediterranean tasting, healthy and packed full of flavour. I loved it.
Mr Globalmouse had Peixinhos da Horta. A simple and tasty dish of deep-fried green beans with tartar sauce, which the children were big fans of too.
Peixinhos da Horta translates to “little fish from the garden” and is a traditional Portuguese dish dating back to the 16th century. It is even said to have inspired Japanese tempura when Portuguese traders arrived in Japan. It’s a lovely example of how Portuguese cuisine has influenced food cultures around the world.
Children’s meals
The children then tucked into dishes of home-made fish fingers and chips and big bowls of fresh pasta. They ate really well, enjoying the flavours and tastes as we watched the sea crashing outside.
It’s worth noting how refreshing it is to see children’s meals that feel freshly prepared rather than an afterthought. The fish fingers were clearly made with real white fish, lightly coated and crisp, and the pasta dishes were generous and comforting. For families visiting Madeira, finding restaurants in Funchal that cater well to children can make all the difference to an evening out.
Main courses
For our main courses I had a Cappelletti pasta dish with broccoli, olives and pine nuts which was equally fresh and full of flavour.
Cappelletti is a stuffed pasta traditionally from northern Italy, and seeing it on the menu shows the subtle international influences woven into Madeira’s culinary scene. The olives and pine nuts added texture and richness, while the broccoli kept the dish vibrant and fresh. It felt wholesome yet indulgent at the same time.
I loved the tastes and always felt that I was eating well and food prepared with care and love.
Mr Globalmouse had tuna steaks which came with spinach, mash, pine nuts and tomato. The tuna was cooked to perfection and was again a simple, yet effective dish. It was beautifully presented and so tasty.
Madeira’s location in the Atlantic means seafood here is exceptional. Tuna is a staple of Madeiran cuisine, often served simply to let its freshness shine. This dish did exactly that – perfectly seared on the outside, tender in the middle, and paired with comforting accompaniments. It felt very true to the island’s coastal identity.

And what better way to finish such a delicious meal but with Madeira cake and ice cream infused with Bual Madeiran wine.
Madeira wine has been produced on the island since the 15th century and became famous during the Age of Exploration because it travelled well on long sea voyages. Bual (or Boal) is one of the sweeter styles of Madeira wine, rich and caramel-like, making it perfect for desserts. The pairing of Madeira cake with Bual-infused ice cream felt like a celebration of the island’s culinary heritage.
The Atlantic Restaurant has an airy chilled-out atmosphere where you’re welcome to eat, relax and simply enjoy the views of the ocean.
It was filled with families, couples and friends. We had such great service from the staff that we felt really well looked after. We loved it.
