Taking a short stroll from the Trevi Fountain or the Parthenon you’ll discover another Roman treasure. Giolitti is as much a part of the city’s history as many of its ancient treasures.

Opened in the 1900s and based in the same location since the 1930s, this Gelato house has people queuing around the block for their ice creams.

It’s the oldest ice cream parlour in the city. And is still incredibly popular.

There’s a distinctly vintage feel to the place too. You queue up to purchase a ticket for your gelato before moving on to select your flavours at another part of the shop.

Alongside the ice creams there is a cool bar selling espressos from a machine bearing the Giolitti name. Along with a variety of drinks and a counter where you can buy all kinds of Italian cakes and pastries.

This classic feel adds to the wonderful atmosphere.

Looking at the cakes

Selecting our ice creams and a number of delicious cakes we ventured outside to sit and watch the world go by.

Cakes

This busy little corner of Rome is a wonderful spot to enjoy real gelato. Made daily to traditional and secret family recipes.

Flavours include champagne, marsala custard, and ricotta. And they are only made by members of the Giolitti family.

The business is now run by the fourth generation of Giolittis. With sons and daughters also part of the family firm.

Ice cream

Their ice creams are so popular that there are other branches popping up around the world. As far afield as Kuwait.

The fact that no other hands than the Giolitti family create these desserts must make for a logistical headache. But they clearly have their gelato skills perfected.

Running their Gelateria late into the night and seven days a week.

We all absolutely loved our gelato. Creamy and thick with truly authentic flavours.

It’s a real delight to discover somewhere which has cared so much about its product for so many years. It’s a testament to their dedication that so many people seek them out.
