Matilda The Musical review – Bristol Hippodrome

Matilda Bristol

There are some musicals that feel completely timeless, and Matilda The Musical is undoubtedly one of them. Fifteen years after it first opened in London’s West End, this extraordinary production continues to delight audiences of all ages, and its latest visit to the Bristol Hippodrome proves exactly why it remains one of the most beloved family musicals ever created.

Inspired by Roald Dahl’s Matilda, and brought brilliantly to life by writer Dennis Kelly and composer-lyricist Tim Minchin, the show tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a remarkable young girl blessed with a vivid imagination, a brilliant mind and the courage to challenge the unfair adults who surround her.

The musical’s success is nothing short of remarkable. Winner of over 100 major awards, including 24 for Best Musical, it has firmly earned its place as one of the most successful family shows ever created.

Much of that success comes from the strength of the creative team. Developed and directed by Matthew Warchus, with imaginative design by Rob Howell and energetic choreography from Peter Darling, the production creates a theatrical world that feels inventive, magical and wonderfully unique.

Howell’s set design transforms the stage into a giant playground of books, letters and school desks, perfectly capturing the quirky spirit of Dahl’s story. Every scene is packed with visual surprises, ensuring younger audience members are captivated while adults admire the creativity and attention to detail.

The touring cast is equally impressive. The title role is shared by Madison Davis, Mollie Hutton, Olivia Ironmonger and Sanna Kurihara who was Matilda on the night we attended, delivering a remarkable performance full of intelligence, warmth and determination.

The many child performers deserve enormous praise too. Their energy, confidence and precision are astonishing throughout the production, particularly during the show’s demanding musical numbers and choreography.

Of course, no production of Matilda would be complete without Miss Trunchbull. Richard Hurst is superb in the role, perfectly balancing comic absurdity with genuine menace and generating huge laughs from the audience throughout the evening.

In contrast, Tessa Kadler brings warmth and sincerity to Miss Honey, providing the emotional heart of the story. Meanwhile, Adam Stafford and Rebecca Thornhill are wonderfully entertaining as Matilda’s hopelessly self-absorbed parents, delivering many of the production’s funniest moments.

Tim Minchin’s score remains as fresh and witty as ever. Songs including Naughty, When I Grow Up, Miracle and the show-stopping Revolting Children are packed with clever lyrics, memorable melodies and plenty of heart.

What continues to make Matilda so special is its ability to tackle serious themes without ever losing its sense of fun. The show celebrates bravery, intelligence, kindness and individuality, delivering a message that resonates just as strongly with adults as it does with children.

There are also countless charming details woven throughout the production. The Crunchem Hall School badge worn on the children’s blazers was designed by legendary illustrator Quentin Blake adding another touch of fun to the performance.

Whether you are introducing your children to Matilda for the first time or revisiting a family favourite, this production delivers everything audiences could wish for. Funny, moving, inventive and packed with unforgettable songs, it remains one of the finest family musicals ever created.

As a family show, it is hard to beat. A joyful celebration of courage, imagination and the power of standing up for what is right, Matilda The Musical leaves audiences of all ages thoroughly enchanted.

Matilda The Musical is playing at the Bristol Hippodrome and is highly recommended for families, theatre lovers and anyone who still believes in the power of a great story.
