Every trip we take is all about balance. We always try to get enough of things we want to see mixed with enough of things the kids want to see. Piterland, St Petersburg – Russia’s biggest waterpark is the perfect family day out in St Petersburg. It’s also a great insight into Russian family life.

About Piterland, St Petersburg – Russia’s biggest waterpark

The park is huge and completely covered with a large glass dome ceiling. It’s a really impressive building.

Inside it is split into different sections.

The younger children’s pool at Piterland St Petersburg

We spent most of our time in the younger children’s pool which was lovely and warm.

There’s a great colourful section with small water slides and fun activities to pour water and play.

We spent ages here as it was perfect for our two-year-old right through to our seven-year-old.

Even us adults had a go on the slides which our children thought was very funny. Particularly when, suddenly and without any warning a huge bucket that had been silently filling up at the top tipped upside down and absolutely soaked everyone in its path, including me at the bottom of a slide.

It wasn’t the last time that bucket gave us a soaking but it all added to the fun.

Lazy River

There was also a river running all around Aqualand which you could let pull you around by its current.

There are lifeguards keeping an eye on everyone but it’s good to keep hold of younger children here.

We enjoyed our trip around the park, spotting some of the slides we wanted to go on.

Pirate ship and the bigger slides

In the middle of Piterland is a huge wooden pirate ship which you can climb up onto to go on the big water slides.

These were brilliant, some using waterjets to shoot you up higher and all taking different high-speed routes around the park.

Unfortunately, you had to be 10 or older to go on these slides so our seven-year-old was very disappointed. The queues are quite considerable to get on the slides and we didn’t realise until after we’d queued up which didn’t help.

Also in Piterland and which you can access without leaving the pool area are restaurants to pick up drinks, snacks and even lunch.

You are given bracelets when you enter the park that automatically open your locker and can also be used to buy food and drink which you pay for when you exit.

It’s a really clever system.

On top of all of this they have other events going on. Such as a DJ who suddenly appeared with his decks to play tunes and conduct an aqua-aerobic session.

We loved our time at Piterland and thought it was a really impressive water park.

To start with Piterland is a large shopping centre on the outskirts of St Petersburg.

You can get to it by taking the bus and tram but we opted for jumping in a taxi to get there and back to our hotel.

Like a lot of Russia, it is also not cheap – about £50 to spend the morning there as a family.

We managed to work out there was a cheaper ticket if you wanted to spend less than five hours there which for us was more than enough.

Some of the shops in Piterland also offer discount vouchers if you shop with them. But we didn’t have time or the language skills to work out how or where to do this so we decided to just go for it.

No cameras are allowed inside but there are official photographers wandering around who snap lots of pictures that you can buy when you leave if you wish.
