In the heart of St Petersburg’s North-Western District, close to the historic Mariinsky Theatre is a wonderful restaurant which boasts a truly family-friendly experience. This restaurant is packed with atmosphere and plenty of space for families to dine comfortably together.
There’s a design theme running throughout the dining area of traditional Russian folk flowers. These are featured on the tables, ceilings and a display of plates signed by famous diners who have visited Sadko over the years.
Sadko is a great place to taste the best of traditional Russian cuisine. And its authenticity is enhanced by its setting in this 18th-century building.
We tried out a number of Russian dishes including a delicious Vinaigrette salad packed with beetroot.
We also tried lenten golubtsy (cabbage rolls) stuffed with vegetables and rice, which were oven baked with tomato sauce and were delicious.
For our main courses we had fantastic Halibut, oven baked with potatoes and tomatoes. And also Draniki (pan-fried potato pancakes) with sour cream.
We also loved the mushroom pirozhok and cabbage pirozhok (Russian pastry parcels).
There is a great range of dishes available for children too such as tasty fish nuggets. And the lovely desserts included Traditional Russian blinis and ice creams.
Sadko also hides a wonderful secret for children. A vast playroom is tucked away around the back of the restaurant, safely within the confines of the building, but away from the dining area.
The playroom is like a well-resourced day nursery. There’s a huge variety of toys to play with, drawing and colouring corners as well as computers with simple games to play.
It was great to let our children to play after dinner while we relaxed over a glass of wine and coffee.

Wow. Have to admit my first thoughts were that it doesn’t look very family friendly, it looks very formal and grown up, but then wow, that playroom! What a fab idea. Wish there were more places over here like that (hmmm, scratches chin and thinks up a new business venture…!!)
