If you are looking for a musical that sends you out of the theatre smiling, singing and genuinely buzzing with energy, The Bodyguard at Bristol Hippodrome absolutely delivers.
Based on the iconic 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, this touring production is less a faithful recreation of the movie and more a full-scale concert-musical packed with some of the greatest pop songs ever written. From the moment of the shocking opening to the show and first number begins, the show rarely pauses for breath.
At the performance we attended, the role of superstar Rachel Marron was played by Mireia Mambo, and she was sensational. Stepping into a role so closely associated with Whitney Houston is no easy task, but Mambo brought both power and warmth to the character. Her vocals were outstanding throughout the evening, particularly in I Have Nothing, Run to You and the show-stopping I Will Always Love You, which received a huge ovation from the Bristol audience.
Adam Garcia is equally impressive as former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer. He gives the production a calm, understated centre that balances the high-energy musical numbers. The chalk and cheese chemistry between Garcia and Mambo feels natural and believable, allowing the romantic storyline to develop without becoming overly sentimental.
The supporting cast is exceptionally strong. Sasha Monique brings real emotion and edge to the role of Nicki Marron, while the ensemble keeps the pace relentless with slick choreography and seamless scene changes. The production values are excellent, with concert-style lighting, a strong live band and a sound mix that lets the big numbers soar.
What makes The Bodyguard such a crowd-pleaser is the sheer number of hits packed into one evening. Queen of the Night, So Emotional, Saving All My Love, One Moment in Time and I Wanna Dance with Somebody arrive one after another, and by the final section of the show the atmosphere feels closer to a live arena concert than a traditional musical.
The second half is particularly strong. Tension builds around the stalker storyline while the musical numbers become even bigger and more emotional. The finale had much of the audience on its feet, dancing and singing along, which is always a good sign that a touring musical has truly connected with its audience.
For families, couples or anyone who enjoys Whitney Houston’s music, this is an easy recommendation. Teenagers familiar with the songs from films, streaming playlists or social media will find plenty to enjoy, while older audience members will appreciate the nostalgia of hearing these classics performed live by such a talented company.
