Up Hotel Budapest – a stylish family stay in the heart of the city

Up Hotel Budapest, Hungary

From the moment we arrived at Up Hotel Budapest, on a winter trip to Budapest, it felt like we had found one of those brilliant city bases that just works for a family. Modern, welcoming and brilliantly located, it offered exactly what we needed after long cold days exploring the Hungarian capital. We stayed in two of their superior rooms, which was a good set-up for the five of us – comfortable, cleverly designed and with just enough flexibility to make travelling with three children feel easy rather than complicated.

This is very much a contemporary and stylish hotel, but one that understands that families need space, comfort and thoughtful details. After busy days wandering through grand boulevards and historic streets, it was a place we looked forward to returning to.

Budapest in winter - EVERYTHING you need to know and do, Hungary

Up Hotel Budapest is located close to Vรกrosliget (City Park), one of the largest green spaces in the city. From our windows we looked directly down onto a small park below (Hunyadi Ter Park), which in winter had a scattering of snow sprinkled across it. That view alone made the stay feel magical – the bare trees etched against pale skies and the white dusting on the lawns giving everything a calm, wintry hush.

The location is ideal for families who want to explore on foot but still have a peaceful base. Within walking distance youโ€™ll find:

  • Heroes’ Square – one of the cityโ€™s most impressive landmarks
  • Szรฉchenyi Thermal Bath – perfect for older children and adults
  • Hungarian Parliament Building – an iconic riverside sight
  • House of Terror Museum – powerful and thought-provoking

We visited the House of Terror Museum during our stay, and while it is not light viewing, it is an important and moving insight into Hungaryโ€™s 20th-century history. For families with older children, it offers valuable context and discussion points.

The lovely square outside had a small local food market running along its edges. It felt very much like somewhere Hungarians actually shop, rather than a tourist hotspot. We picked up fresh breads and interesting cheeses at very reasonable prices, which made for easy lunches and snacks. It is always so nice to find places that feel authentic and unpolished in the best possible way.

We stayed in two superior rooms, which worked well for our family of five. Each room had a comfortable double bed and a sofa that could be converted into a single bed. This meant our third child had a proper bed in the childrenโ€™s room, rather than a makeshift arrangement. Having two separate rooms gave everyone breathing space, which is invaluable on a city break.

The rooms were extremely well kitted out. We had:

  • A Nespresso machine
  • A fridge
  • A desk area
  • Plenty of hanging space
  • An additional sofa
  • Large windows overlooking the park

The beds were really comfortable – exactly what you need after hours of sightseeing on cobbled streets. It felt like a retreat at the end of each day.

One of the standout features was the smart in-room tablet. Through it we could control various room settings, access hotel information and explore recommendations. It is such a simple addition, but it made everything feel seamless and modern.

On arrival we were greeted with a lovely welcome gift โ€“ lots of fresh fruit and some little muffins. A really nice touch after we arrived, slightly weary from all the travelling.

The bathroom was compact but had everything we needed. The shower was hot, with good pressure, and there were plenty of quality products provided. For a family city stay, it ticked all the boxes: functional, clean and well designed without wasting space.

Posner - Up Hotel Budapest

The hotel has an on-site restaurant, Posner Bistro & Bar which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also has a small coffee shop in the park opposite the hotel.

Breakfast: a spread worth waking up for

Breakfast at Up Hotel Budapest was a real highlight. The dining area felt bright and relaxed, and the choice on offer was impressive.

There were juices that automatically filled from the machine (which the children found endlessly entertaining), alongside:

  • Fresh pastries and breads
  • A wide selection of fruits
  • Cereals and yoghurts
  • An array of cheeses – including lots of really interesting, local varieties
  • A thoughtful little vegan section

The cheese selection in particular stood out. Hungary has a rich dairy tradition, and it was lovely to sample different textures and flavours each morning.

There was something for everyone, whether you wanted a light start or a hearty plate before a day of walking.

For a family, having such variety makes mornings so much easier. No negotiating, no compromise – everyone simply chooses what they fancy.

Dinner at Posner Bistro & Bar

On one of the evenings we decided to eat in and have a family meal at Posner Bistro & Bar. This was a really incredible meal which we absolutely loved. Some hotel restaurants can fall a little flat, but not Posner. The food was outstanding.

We had starters of burrata and salmon and avocado toast, which were brimming with flavour and freshness. Just really good food.

The main courses included such a good halloumi burger with pomegranate sauce, and rocket and a grilled salmon with quinoa. The tastes just really popped and their mocktails were particularly well enjoyed by the children.

With puddings including a pistachio basque cheesecake and a yuzu mousse we all commented that it was one of the nicest family meals we’ve had in a long time. Definitely recommended if you’re staying at the hotel and even if you’re not.

Coffees and cakes at Lรญra Terasz

Lรญra Terasz

Opposite the hotel, in the park, is Lรญra Terasz, the hotel’s specialty cafe. It’s a great place to stop for coffee and cakes.

Up Hotel Budapest also has a small but well-equipped gym area and a sauna. After a long day exploring the city, slipping into the warmth of the sauna was incredibly soothing. Budapest is famous for its thermal baths, so it felt fitting to embrace a little wellness time even within the hotel itself.

The gym space is modern and thoughtfully laid out – ideal if you want to keep up a routine while travelling. Even just a short session can make a difference after indulgent breakfasts and plenty of cake stops.

Up Hotel Budapest combines smart, modern design with real comfort. For families, the option of rooms with sofa beds and the flexibility of booking two rooms makes it a very practical choice. The park views added a sense of calm, and the location near major sights meant we rarely needed to travel far.

The welcome gift, the smart room features, the excellent breakfast and the wellness facilities all contributed to a stay that felt both thoughtful and easy.

City breaks with children can sometimes feel rushed or cramped, but here we had space, comfort and a place that felt like a proper retreat at the end of each day. For a stylish, well-located family stay in Budapest, Up Hotel Budapest is a fantastic option – and one we would happily return to.
