Ever since Weston Super Mare hosted Banksy’s Dismaland, it’s been undergoing a bit of a regeneration. There’s a whole host of street art to explore, there are quirky shops, the beach and of course the pier. We took a family trip to Weston Super Mare with kids to find out what this classic seaside town has to offer families. Street art
We arrived in Weston when the skies had just opened up. It wasn’t the best start to the trip but when you visit in November you’ve got to be prepared for a few showers.
Luckily for us it soon cleared up meaning we could head out to explore the back streets and the art work.
If you’re visiting you can pick up a map from the Tourist Information desk which will show you where the top sites around the town are.
If you pick up some 3D glasses from the tourist information shop then the work by Insane 51 is amazing. Such a clever piece of art and we all took our time enjoying it.
Shops in Weston Super Mare
The shops in Weston are also fun for a wander through. The children loved the retro toy shops and I really enjoyed find Christopher’s Belgian chocolate shop where he hand makes his own chocolates.
Weston Museum
Weston Museum is well worth checking out. This sweet little museum is free to enter and tells the history of the town through various artifacts.
We loved seeing the old railings from the pier from the early 1900s and looking at the photos showing buildings from today and a hundred years ago.
When we visited there was also a visiting Horrible Histories exhibit that was fantastic. So it’s well worth checking out what’s on offer.
They also have a great, well priced cafe (the cakes looked amazing) and shop selling locally-produced crafts.
The Pier
The children’s favourite part of the trip, unsurprisingly, was a visit to The Grand Pier. Rebuilt in 2010 after the devastating fire, it is packed full of whirring sounds and flashing lights.
It was brilliant to watch the kids all working together on the 2p machines, determined to win one of the prizes that would drop out.
They loved playing all the different games, and having a go on the Formula One simulator. They spent all afternoon here and it was hard to get them to leave.
Dinner at Revo’s
We spent the evening at the cosy, slightly Scandi feel of Revo’s, right on the beachfront.
We loved this restaurant which had a really relaxed vibe and some great vegan burgers. It was a really nice, family meal where we chatted about all the things we’d seen and done.
I particularly loved the sticky toffee pudding afterwards.
Staying the night in Weston Super Mare
We spent the night at The Royal Hotel in Weston Super Mare. This was a comfortable stay in their family apartments which had two bedrooms.
We slept well and enjoyed the veggie breakfast the next morning.
See Monster
The next morning started at the absolutely wonderful See Monster. Sadly this isn’t a permanent fixture in Weston, but we loved this North Sea Oil rig that was brought over from Rotterdam.
Part art installation, part statement on the environment it was incredibly evocative.
We loved winding our way up through the layers. Past the scales and to the water vapours which were reminiscent of being within a cloud.
We all fell in love with the see Monster and wished it was staying.
Weston-Super-Mare beach
The beach here, particularly on a sunny say is perfect for a wander. There are lots of places to sit in the sunshine too.
We loved walking along the seafront with all the little shops dotted about.
Our conclusions of a family weekend in Weston-Super-Mare
After some hot and delicious chips, liberally covered in salt and vinegar, we were off. We’d had a great couple of days in Weston-Super-Mare.
It’s wonderful to see how it keeps reinventing itself and coming up with new treats to offer the visitor. We can’t wait to see what’s going to come next.
