Globalmouse writer Fiona heads for Jersey with her family and explore the delights of the island’s Atlantic Hotel – an ideal Jersey hotel for families.

Set in six acres of gorgeous gardens with picture-perfect views over the five mile Saint Ouen bay. The Atlantic is a bright, airy and totally sumptuous art deco hotel with more awards than you can shake a stick at not to mention a Michelin star.

With only 50 superbly-equipped and well-proportioned bedrooms, it feels boutique rather than big. And it is aided by the ever-present and incredibly attentive staff on hand to help with absolutely anything from tide times, to tennis rackets, best restaurants to best rock pools.
The hotel surrounds a gorgeous rosemary-scented outside pool with stunning views of the garden with its mature cedar trees (excellent for climbing), and the bay beyond.
The outside pool was pretty fresh at 18 degrees but the children all braved it. We couldn’t be seen not to.
And after a hot trip to the beach the water temperature was perfect.
We did note that there aren’t many places you can visit so close to home in April and be warm in your swimming costume in an outside pool.Â
There’s also a much warmer inside pool and Jacuzzi in the hotel spa which we had to ourselves on every occasion we went.
The hotel is positioned on the quieter south-west side of the island which puts you in a great position to explore some of Jersey’s best beaches. But being only nine miles by five miles, you’re never far from anything on this tiny island.
Accommodation
We were based on the ground floor in inter-joining rooms overlooking the outdoor swimming pool and sea beyond. The rooms and beds were vast. We could easily have fitted our family of five into the one massive bed.
Every day the fruit bowl is filled with crisp apples, a newspaper delivered to your door, and Molton Brown bath products abound.
Asked by the staff if we’d like a wake-up call we suddenly remembered despite all the luxury, we were here with our three children. We wouldn’t be needing a wake-up call. However the whole affair is a complete treat.

Sitting on the terrace watching the sun go down with pre-dinner ‘mocktails’ was a highlight for all of us. That is until we sat down to dinner for our first family experience of the Ocean Restaurant presided over by Michelin starred chef Mark Jordon.
After a quick pre-emptive table manners briefing, we were escorted to our table. An immaculately prepared table with starched tablecloth and polished silverware.
Chairs tucked in beneath us, napkins draped across our laps and never an empty glass on the table throughout the entire meal.
Punctuated by an ‘amuse-bouche’ and a palette cleanser the food was out if this world: beetroot-cured salmon, with crab and fennel salad to start followed by roasted fillet of hake, cabbage terrine and Jersey mussels.
The children were just as delighted with the nursery menu. My eight year old said the spaghetti was the best she has ever tasted.
The breakfasts were an event in themselves and set us up for the day. Cereals, mueslis, yoghurts, pastries, continental ham and cheese followed by a full Jersey breakfast. And as if that wasn’t enough, a few pancakes, bacon and maple syrup to top it off.
Mark Jordan at the Beach, the sister restaurant to The Ocean, sits on the south coast overlooking St Aubin’s bay.
Blessed with great views and even better food, it’s slightly less formal than The Ocean. But refined Mark Jordan touches are apparent in everything on the menu from truffle popcorn, burger with fried egg and foie gras and their signature dish – passion fruit soufflé.
The children were completely catered for with their own three-course kid’s menu.
The best bits of the Atlantic Hotel, Jersey
Fine dining experience with young children might not appear to go together. But our experience was magical if not a little surreal.
Amazing food, and the very attentive staff made us feel totally at ease even after repeatedly dropping our napkins on the floor which were replaced in two seconds flat.
We were still talking about the experience when we got home.
Jersey’s weather is enviably good and with an endless beach options this is a great choice if you like sand, sun and sea.
worth bearing in mind
The Atlantic is an indulgent five-star treat but in our opinion worth it. The staff are wonderful and made us feel so relaxed and welcome in quite such a refined atmosphere.
