A luxury family stay – a review of NH Collection Palazzo Verona (formally Palazzo Victoria Verona, Italy). Verona, oh so sweet Verona. What a wonderful city. I knew it was going to be somewhere I would love and that couldn’t have been more true. With its cobbled streets and tall striped clock towers it’s the perfect Italian city, so evocative of Shakespeare’s tales and feels full of intrigue and romance. This is our review of Palazzo Victoria Verona, now called NH Collection Verona.

NH Collection Verona is a wonderful oasis of calm amongst the hustle and bustle of the old town, Verona. Once home to a powerful Veronese family in the 14th century it’s a hotel that oozes history and style.

From the outside it blends perfectly into the cobbled streets and medieval buildings but inside it has a modern twist with cool lighting and artwork.

The building itself is layered with history. Archaeological remains beneath the hotel include Roman ruins and ancient walls, and throughout the property you can spot preserved frescoes and architectural details that date back hundreds of years. Staying here feels like stepping into Verona’s past while still enjoying the comfort of a contemporary luxury hotel.

NH Collection Verona has managed to blend the old with the new perfectly. With Roman frescoes and old wooden doors working alongside water features and moss covered walls in the lobby.

Everywhere you walk in the hotel there are huge glass bottles of scent, giving you a blast of beautiful smells (all available in the hotel shop) wherever you go.

It’s this attention to sensory detail that elevates the stay. The scent, the lighting and the curated art create an atmosphere that feels boutique and intimate, rather than corporate.

The location is fantastic. Right in the centre of the old town and a short walk to Piazza Brà and all of the historic sites for a wander. There are plenty of restaurants and shops surrounding the hotel.

Being located on Corso Porta Borsari means you are just moments from Verona Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and Juliet’s House. For a family stay in Verona, being able to return easily to the hotel for a rest between sightseeing is invaluable, especially during the warmer months when the Italian sun can be intense.

NH Collection Verona, Italy – Sleeps:

With 72 rooms there are lots of combinations available. We stayed in two connecting rooms. A suite leading to a grand deluxe triple.

This consisted of a huge master bedroom with a gorgeous bed. I loved this room with five windows on three sides it was the perfect place to watch Veronese families promenading after dinner in the streets below. There is something wonderfully Italian about the evening passeggiata, when families stroll through the streets before or after dinner. Watching this ritual from above made us feel completely immersed in local life.

This connected through to another double bedroom with an additional bed in for our third child.

Both rooms had fantastic bathrooms. The double bathroom was luxurious enough and very large.

But the bathroom in the suite was amazing with a jacuzzi bath that kept the children entertained for ages. It was like their own mini swimming pool.

I loved the touches in the room like big draped windows and original paintings. And modern details like the Nespresso machine to keep us topped up with coffee.

The interconnecting layout worked brilliantly for us as a family of five. It gave the children their own space while still allowing us to feel connected. For anyone searching for family accommodation in Verona, this flexibility is a real advantage.

Food at NH Collection Palazzo Verona

We didn’t eat in the restaurant but we did have breakfast in the Palazzo Victoria which was a sumptuous spread of fruits, pastries and even pizza.

The children loved the large selection of cakes and there really was something for everyone.

Breakfast at NH Collection hotels is known for its variety, and this one was no exception. Alongside Italian pastries and fresh fruit there were hot dishes, breads, cheeses and local specialities. It’s the kind of breakfast that sets you up perfectly for a full day of sightseeing in Verona.

The Best Bits

Staying at NH Collection Verona was like staying in the real Verona. We were downtown, experiencing the city as the locals would have for centuries past.

Being in the old town meant we could wander out to visit the shops and sights and easily get back to have a rest when the children’s legs were tiring.

It was lovely to be able to take the opportunity to have an early evening stroll around the streets and back to the hotel again.

NH Collection Verona really did feel like a wonderful, calm world amongst all of the business of the streets outside.

For us, the greatest luxury was location. There is something incredibly special about stepping out of your hotel directly into centuries of history. No taxis, no long walks, just the immediate charm of Verona on your doorstep.

Worth Bearing in Mind at NH Collection Palazzo Verona:

There are a couple of things worth bearing in mind at the NH Collection Palazzo Verona.

The first is parking. Driving in the old town is restricted but if you are a guest at the hotel you can drive in and if you give them your registration number they will approve your car on the system.

But parking around the town is severely restricted. It felt a little cheeky to be asked if we wanted to stay in the hotel’s covered car park at a high price and when we said no we were immediately told they would point out an alternative for nearly a quarter of the price. So unless you really have a need to have your car on site at the hotel I would advise asking for directions to the alternatives. They’re not a long walk away.

If you are planning a Verona city break, it is worth considering arriving by train. Verona Porta Nuova station connects easily with Venice, Milan and Lake Garda, and taxis into the old town are straightforward. Driving in historic Italian centres can be stressful due to ZTL (limited traffic zones), so planning ahead is essential.

My second issue is with the windows which don’t have child proof locks. Something that always makes my stomach sink.

My three are getting old enough now that they know not to go near windows in hotels. But the windows at NH Collection Palazzo Verona are fairly easy to open and when they do they swing fully open. I hope the hotel will look into adding a simple child-proof lock to these.

Child Friendly?

With interconnecting rooms, the Palazzo Victoria gave us lots of space as a family and the children loved the hotel and didn’t want to leave.

I liked how the rooms had lots of place to sit and relax in too.

In all we found this a really luxurious hotel to get to the heart of Verona from. It felt like a really authentic Italian stay with some wonderful features to allow us all to feel pampered.

If you are looking for a luxury family hotel in Verona that combines history, location and comfort, NH Collection Palazzo Verona is an excellent choice. It offers the rare opportunity to stay in a historic building without sacrificing modern amenities. For us, it perfectly complemented our time exploring Verona with kids and added an extra layer of magic to an already beautiful city.
