Climbing fun at The Arc Chippenham

When planning our family outings, we always look for places that combine fun, learning, and a bit of adventure. On our latest weekend trip, we found all three at The Arc climbing centre in Chippenham, England. With two teenagers and a 12-year-old in tow, we embarked on a day of climbing, bouldering, and discovering new heights.

As we drove into Chippenham, the anticipation was palpable. Climbing has always seemed like an intriguing activity for us as a family, but we had never quite made it to a climbing centre. The Arc – The Climbing Academy turned out to be the perfect introduction.

The Arc is housed in a modern building, and stands out with its sleek design and vibrant atmosphere. Walking in, we were greeted by a spacious and brightly lit interior, full of colourful climbing walls of varying heights and difficulties.

The reception area was welcoming, with friendly staff who quickly made us feel at home. The vibe was lively, with the sounds of climbers and the occasional cheer echoing through the centre.

After a quick check-in, we met our climbing instructor for the day. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he immediately put our minds at ease with his approachable manner and evident passion for climbing. He began by giving us a brief overview of the session’s activities and what to expect.

Bouldering Fun

This was a great introduction to the world of climbing, never too far from the ground and great to get our kids involved straight away.

Unlike the climbing walls, bouldering involves climbing shorter walls without the use of harnesses, with thick mats to cushion any falls. This activity appealed to my children’s love for quick, intense bursts of activity.

Bouldering turned out to be a different kind of challenge. It required more lateral thinking and flexibility. Our middle child, who has a knack for solving puzzles, excelled at this. She loved figuring out the best routes and testing her balance and agility.

The rest of the family quickly followed suit, finding joy in the trial-and-error process and the more relaxed, playful nature of bouldering.

Climbing walls

The next part of our session was dedicated to the basics of climbing. Our instructor had explained the essential safety measures, the importance of proper gear, and the basic techniques. Our teenagers paid close attention, fascinated by the intricacies of climbing that they had never considered before.

His positive and encouraging style was perfect for us as first-timers. He stressed that climbing was not just about strength but also about strategy and problem-solving.

Equipped with harnesses and climbing shoes, we headed to the beginner walls. Our kids found themselves in a supportive camaraderie.

They took turns climbing and celebrating each small victory. The instructor stayed close, offering tips and motivation, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and confident.

Scaling New Heights: The Climbing Wall

Next, it was time for the main event – the climbing wall. The sight of the towering wall was both thrilling and intimidating. Our oldest volunteered to go first. With our instructor’s guidance, he started his ascent. It was incredible to watch him navigate the holds, his initial nervousness giving way to concentration and determination. Reaching the top, he beamed with pride, and we all erupted in cheers.

Following his lead, the rest of us took turns climbing. Each climb presented its own challenges, but our instructor’s encouragement never wavered. He had a knack for knowing when to push us and when to offer reassurance. By the time our youngest took on his final climb the sense of accomplishment was palpable, the initial apprehension replaced by a sense of achievement.

As our session drew to a close, we gathered to reflect on the day’s adventures. It was great to feel the benefits of the encouragement which had kept us climbing and exploring.

After all the climbing and bouldering, we headed to The Arc’s café to refuel. The café is cosy and inviting and offers a variety of delicious options. We opted for veggie wraps and calzones, which turned out to be the perfect post-climbing meal.

The wraps were bursting with fresh vegetables and flavourful sauces, while the calzones were warm, cheesy, and satisfying. As we dug into our food, we couldn’t help but share tales of our climbs. Each of us had our own story of triumph and challenge, and the café provided a relaxing setting to recount our adventures.

Leaving The Arc, we felt a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. Our teenagers couldn’t stop talking about their climbs, planning their next visit even before we reached the car. It was great to see them so engaged and enthusiastic about something new.
