Things to do in Kingston Upon Thames

Kingston Upon Thames is a quintessentially English town and has everything to make for a fun family weekend. It’s the perfect mix of sophistication and hair-raising fun. We found the best things to do in Kingston Upon Thames (with kids or without) during our time there. If you’re travelling to London Kingston upon Thames is an easy day trip so it’s well worth checking out.

About Kingston Upon Thames

Just an hour away is the centre of London but Kingston Upon Thames feels a world away with open spaces, a genteel pace of life, towpaths and people enjoying life on the Thames.

There is even a royal palace just a few minutes along the river.

With some excellent dining options, great hotel choices, relaxing walks and parks, there is a great deal on offer here for families or couples.

Its history

Kingston upon Thames has an amazing history dating back to Saxon times. Its name, meaning “King’s Town,” highlights its royal significance, as it was the coronation site for several Anglo-Saxon kings, including Athelstan, England’s first king, in the 10th century. Kingston’s coronation stone, believed to have been used in these ceremonies, still stands today as a symbol of its regal heritage.

In medieval times, Kingston thrived as a market town due to its strategic location on the River Thames. The Clattern Bridge, built in the 12th century, remains one of England’s oldest surviving bridges and was vital for trade and transport. The town also played an important role in commerce, particularly in the wool trade, which boosted its prosperity.

During the Victorian era, Kingston expanded rapidly with the arrival of the railway in 1863. This period saw the development of key landmarks, including the Kingston Museum, which opened in 1904, celebrating the town’s heritage.

In the 20th century, Kingston continued to grow as a major retail and cultural hub while preserving its historical roots. It became part of Greater London in 1965, yet retained its unique identity.

Things to do in Kingston Upon Thames – Take a boat trip to Hampton Court Palace

One of the highlights of the weekend was a boat trip from Turks pier at one end of Kingston Upon Thames up to Hampton Court Palace.

You can disembark here to explore the palace, but equally easy to do is a simple round trip. The boats which run along the river here take you past homes backing onto the water, canoeing centres and plenty of wildlife, with swans and ducks drifting along.

If the weather is fine, there really is no better way to enjoy this stretch of the Thames than taking to the water courtesy of Turks. With its range of boats, some of which look like southern belle paddle steamers it’s a wonderful experience.

Don’t miss the King’s Stone

Close to the centre of the town is a quiet corner, where tucked away is a key piece of English history and once vital part of the country’s Monarchy.

The King’s Stone, after which Kingston Upon Thames is named, is where the first Saxon kings of England were crowned, long before Westminster Abbey was conceived.

Some 1400 years after King Egbert put Kingston Upon Thames on the map, it is lovely to get up close to part of the country’s history.

Visit the markets of Kingston upon Thames

The shopping in Kingston upon Thames is fantastic. The busy town centre is filled with great shops and an equally wonderful market, packed with lively market traders.

It’s great to stop to pick up some fresh fruit and spend some time browsing the stalls and enjoying the hustle and bustle of the market.

Rose Theatre Kingston – one of the best things to do in Kingston Upon Thames

The Rose Theatre Kingston is a renowned cultural venue inspired by the Elizabethan Rose Theatre.

Opened in 2008, it features a unique circular design that provides an intimate viewing experience, seating around 900 people.

The theatre hosts a diverse programme of performances, including plays, musicals, comedy shows, and family-friendly productions. It also supports emerging talent and local community events.

With its riverside location and vibrant atmosphere, the Rose Theatre is a hub for creativity and storytelling.

Enjoy Canbury park

Just outside of the main town, along the river, is the wonderful Canbury Park.

With lots of play equipment for children it’s a lovely way to spend an hour or so on a sunny day. If you’re visiting as a couple it would be wonderful for a picnic.

See one of England’s oldest bridges – things to do in Kingston Upon Thames

Clattern Bridge is one of England’s oldest surviving bridges, dating back to the 12th century.

Built from stone, it originally served as a crossing over the Hogsmill River and played a vital role in Kingston’s medieval trade routes.

The bridge’s name is believed to derive from the sound of horses’ hooves clattering across its surface.

It is a Grade I listed structure, reflecting its historical and architectural significance.

Enjoy the history at Kingston Museum

Kingston Museum showcases the town’s rich history and heritage.

Opened in 1904, it offers fascinating exhibits covering archaeology, local history, and art.

The museum features the Eadweard Muybridge Gallery, dedicated to the pioneering photographer and motion-picture innovator born in Kingston.

Highlights include ancient artifacts, Victorian exhibits, and interactive displays, making it great for all ages.

With free entry, it’s a great place to learn about Kingston’s past, including its Saxon roots and royal connections. The museum also hosts workshops and events.

Go for a walk along the Thames

A walk along the Thames watching the canoes and paddle-boarders taking to the river is a lovely activity. This stretch of the river has some great wide towpath walks.

Because of this it feels safe for children to walk along and not get too close to the water.

You could easily spend a whole morning walking along the Thames around Kingston Upon Thames. With plenty of wildlife and activity to watch on the water, as well as some great houseboats it’s a fun walk.

There are also some great stop-off points with cafes and picnic spots along the river too.

Have some theme park fun

In total contrast to the leafy, sophistication of Kingston Upon Thames, yet only a short drive out, is another world of adventures altogether.

Chessington World of Adventure is an amazing experience for families. It’s a completely different pace of life.

This theme park, zoo and hotel has so much to offer. It would be impossible to see it even in a whole weekend.

It’s a thrilling and wonderful experience for the whole family.

Look out for “Out of Order” by David Mach

This is an iconic public art installation unveiled in 1989.

The sculpture features 12 classic British red telephone boxes, leaning against each other in a domino-like formation.

Positioned on Old London Road, it playfully celebrates British heritage while symbolising change and progress.

Mach, a renowned Scottish sculptor, designed the piece to evoke curiosity and interaction, making it a popular photo spot.

Chessington Hotel – We stayed at the Chessington Hotel. This had amazing views from the bedroom looking out onto the animals.

It also had characters coming to dine with the children at breakfast which added to the fun.

We loved our weekend in Kingston Upon Thames. For the grown-ups we liked the activities and pace of life and the children adored the thrills in Chessington World of Adventures as well as the beautiful town.
