Skiing in Sweden was perfect for our family. We love our Scandinavian trips to the snow. We have travelled extensively to Lapland with kids, skied in Beitostolen in Norway and in Trysil skiing but never before in Sweden. So we were really happy to ski in Klappen with kids. It’s such a beautiful area of Sweden, about five hours drive north from Stockholm (or 20 minutes from the Scandinavian Mountain Airport). For the first part of the week we stayed at the wonderful Högfjällshotell in Sälen. Here’s our review of Sälens Högfjällshotell.

Sälens Högfjällshotell – Location

Högfjällshotellet was built in 1937 by a Norwegian who wanted to build a luxurious spa hotel in the mountains. It is certainly that today.
Set right on the doorstep of Sälen ski resort there is a range of accommodation, a number of restaurants and lots of activities to enjoy.
It feels away from the world and yet well connected and with plenty going on.

Staying at Högfjällshotellet
There’s a number of different types of accommodation from self catering apartments to hotel suites. We stayed in two of the hotel’s double bedrooms.
These interconnected which was perfect for a stay with kids.
We had a double bed which in true Scandi style came with separate duvets.
There was also a desk and seating area which was nice to have.
The room had plenty of storage space with chest of drawers, large wardrobe space and a drying cupboard which was perfect for hanging up all the ski clothes after a day out on the slopes.
There was a good sized bathroom with a powerful shower and nice products.
For the second bedroom there were two single beds. There was also a single sofa bed for our third child which was perfect for him.
The Facilities
The hotel had lots going on for all the family to enjoy.
There was a gym and sauna and even a yoga studio. There was also a really fantastic cinema with regular showings of newly released films.
The hotel is ski in ski out which is fantastic for getting you straight out and onto the slopes.
Eating in at the Sälens Högfjällshotell
There are 13 different restaurants at the hotel, so something for everyone.
We ate breakfast each day at the Högfjällshotell which was a really nice spread of food. It was all self service and there was hot dishes along with cereals, pastries and cheese and meats.
We loved the ginger immunity shot each morning and the breads were really good. It sometimes felt a little short staffed with dishes slow to be replaced but we always filled up well at breakfast here.
We also ate one night at Jack’s BBQ. This was such a wonderful experience. Alongside their regular menu they have an evening where you can enjoy a set meal on long tables. This is what we tried and it was a wonderful experience.
The chef here is amazing with such imaginative dishes. Everyone helps themselves to plates that just keep on coming.
From salads with mountain cheeses to plenty of barbecued meats. If you let them know dietary preferences in advance they will also accommodate these. I had some great vegetarian dishes here.
With the room filled with candlelight it was a lovely evening with great food.
How child friendly is the Sälens Högfjällshotell?
This is a great hotel for families. The rooms are ideal for those travelling with kids, with all the space to spread out and relax.
The children loved the breakfast and would have liked to make it to the cinema if there had been time.
Sälens Högfjällshotell – the best bits

Whether you’re skiing in Sälen or Klappen this is a well located hotel. The views here are beautiful and you feel like you’re away from the world in this beautiful area of Sweden.
We loved the food, the comfortable and well appointed accommodation and the setting.
