Even in winter there are lots of places to go and it’s a city that’s perfect for wandering through. It’s a city we love and have spent lots of time visiting. Its grand, Gothic-style architecture immediately captures the imagination, while the vast collection of exhibits provides endless opportunities for discovery. Kids are greeted by towering dinosaur skeletons, including the impressive Tyrannosaurus rex and Iguanodon.

Pitt Rivers Museum – great things to do in Oxford with kids

One of our favourite places in oxford is the Pitt Rivers Museum.It is a wonderful museum, absolutely jam-packed with curiosities from around the world.

The Pitt Rivers Museum cares for the University of Oxford’s collection of anthropology and world archaeology and there are some amazing things to see here.

For families they have a brilliant trail to follow which gets you looking in all of the cabinets and discovering hundreds of swords, ceremonial masks, ancient toys and so much more. Perhaps the most popular exhibits, particularly if you’re visiting with kids, has to be the many dinosaur and extinct animal exhibits and our seven year old loved it.

The Pitt Rivers Museum definitely has to be up there with the best museums we’ve been to.

The Ashmolean Museum s a fantastic destination for kids in Oxford. Offering a rich blend of art, history, and interactive exhibits it’s a greatplace to visit. As the world’s first public museum, it provides space for children to explore ancient civilizations, fascinating artifacts, and artistic masterpieces.

One of the highlights for families is the free activity trails and backpacks designed for kids. These resources encourage young visitors to embark on treasure hunts, solve puzzles, and complete challenges as they explore the galleries.

What to do in Oxford with kids – Oxford Castle

One of the most interesting places to explore in the city is Oxford Castle right in the centre. With Norman roots it certainly holds lots of secrets and a very interesting past.

Once a prison and now a museum you can take part in scheduled tours to find out more. I would say this is for ages seven and upwards although they don’t have an age limit.

A visit to Oxford castle comes complete with a tour of the tower and former prison. You also get a character tour guide, so you may find yourself being shown around the rooms and prison cells by a Danish Viking king, a monk or even a prisoner.

The tour begins in the oldest parts of the castle and proceeds to the top of the tower through prison cells and tales of cramped, freezing and torturous conditions for the poor souls who found themselves locked up in the stone building.

After climbing a curling staircase you emerge outside at the top of the tower for some great views across the city.

Back inside the castle, you can visit the crypt and prison cells from the 19th and 20th century. The cells have been recreated in many areas adding to the storytelling and the chilling atmosphere throughout the castle.

It’s a great hands on experience and has a lot to offer for a family visit.

Carfax Tower

Carfax Tower in Oxford is a fantastic attraction for visitors of all ages, offering a unique blend of history, stunning views, and a central location. Standing at 74 feet tall, it is all that remains of the 12th-century St. Martin’s Church, making it a fascinating piece of Oxford’s rich history. A great place to visit is Christ Church College which is full of Harry Potter locations like the Great Hall. Christ Church is beautiful and fun to explore even without these connections.

The architecture is beautiful and there are amazing sites at every turn. The door at the bottom of the staircase has ‘no peel’ hammered into it in protest against the Prime Minister, Robert Peel in the 1840s for example.

What is great about Oxford is the amazing amount of history at every turn, and the beautiful architecture you can come across. It’s a brilliant city for a wander.

The Bridge of Sighs, officially known as Hertford Bridge, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1914, it connects two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane. Its design resembles the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice, though it was not modeled directly after it. Blenheim Palace (nearby)

Just outside of the city you can find Blenheim Palace which is perfect for a whole day if you have it.

You can look around this magnificent palace which became the home of Winston Churchill (and still has many artefacts relating to him).

Take a gentle trip down the River Thames, departing from Folly Bridge towards Iffley Lock.

We absolutely love the hop-on-hop-off buses which run in many cities across the world. The Oxford version is great and perfect if you’re visiting with kids.

There are some great sights to see such as the stunning Bridge of Sighs.

Book either 24 hour or 48 hour tickets and use it to travel all across the city. You can also learn as you go with their audio guide as you travel.

Travel easily between Oxford Castle and Queen’s College, as you travel on an open-top, double-decker bus with panoramic views of the city.
