One of the most intriguing-looking towns around and one of the unmissable sites of Southern Italy. Visiting Alberobello with kids is a fun trip out. Visiting Alberobello with kids, Puglia, Italy

All about Alberobello
The UNESCO site of Alberobello is filled with white beehive-shaped buildings. There’s a main settlement down one hillside of the town and a smaller scattering outside of the town – stretching away amongst the olive trees.
There’s something fairytale-like about them. These cosy little dwellings look so inviting.
The buildings are known as Trulli and no one is exactly sure why they exist. Although the building techniques had been passed on from Prehistoric times.
Theories range from them being home to an itinerant workforce who could easily pack up and go. Through to them being built to avoid taxes (as they were built without using mortar).
Trulli usually consist of a square-based building with a domed roof, tiled and often decorated with symbols which had spiritual or symbolic meaning.
Today you see them falling apart in fields as very basic cattle sheds right through to luxury, boutique hotels. Many of the trulli in Alberobello are now shops and restaurants which are perfect to explore.
What to do in Alberobello with kids
Probably the main thing to do in Alberobello is to simply explore the streets and get to soak in the atmosphere. It really does feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
The Rioni Monti is the main district for visitors with steep streets lined with Trulli and filled with shopkeepers touting their wares.
We loved wandering around, looking at souvenirs and trying dried butter bean samples and tastes of olive oil.
We also loved getting into the back streets and imagining what life would have been like here before it became a tourist town.
When the heat of the day becomes too much, grab an ice cream at one of the Trulli and sit amongst these strange buildings.
Getting to Alberobello
Alberobello is around forty minutes from Bari. You can drive there and there are plenty of car parks near Rioni Monti.
You can also catch a train from Bari to Alberobello.
Staying in Alberobello with kids
We stayed in the fabulous Masseria Torre Coccaro which was a leisurely forty minutes away and perfect for a day trip.
You could also opt to stay in a trulli and there are some fabulous options in the town.

I hadn’t heard of this place – it looks amazing. I love a town with interesting buildings, and these look hard to beat for quirkiness. Good to see there was nice ice cream too!
