Hotel children pool winter
Winter at Soar Mill Cove - beautiful in all seasons.

Set down a long sweeping drive towards the sea is Soar Mill Cove Hotel, just outside of Salcombe in Devon. It has the most breathtaking views down to the coast, coupled with great facilities to make for the perfect family getaway.

Ideal for summer days by the sea and winters spent playing cosy games of chess with hot chocolates by your side, it’s a hotel which will sweep you off your feet.

Soar Mill Cove Hotel – Hotel and Location:

Soar Mill Cove is hidden away in its own little Devon valley. With the sea just below and the hills all around, you feel like you’ve stumbled into a secret world. Set in the South Hams just outside of Salcombe, it has everything you need on your doorstep if you want it, but you may not want to leave such a wonderfully relaxing spot.

We visited in late autumn and as storms rumbled around, it provided the ideal retreat, somewhere to relax and rejuvenate, with enough to keep the whole family occupied.

Soar Mill Cove Hotel – Sleeps:

With a collection of luxury rooms, suites and family rooms there is something for everyone. We stayed in a family room which consisted of a main bedroom with a large comfortable bed –

A seating area to look out onto the sea –

A large bathroom and separate children’s bedroom –

Soar Mill Cove Hotel – Food:

We loved the food at Soar Mill Cove. Breakfast had a selection of breads, fruit, yoghurt and juices –

And you could order toast to have with their home-made jam and marmalades (I love marmalade and this was fantastic!) –

They also had a selection of hot food with eggs, bacon, sautéed potatoes etc and some delicious Salcombe Smokies (smoked mackerel fillets) –

And dinner was also delicious. The children tucked into fish and chips –

While we ate delicious tagliatelle with an amazing selection of mushrooms and truffles  –

There was so much delicious food on offer – sea bass, oysters and vegetable tarts with brie. The desserts were incredible, tempting pavlovas and lemon and lime possets, and even the most delicious red berry sabayon made especially for the vegan in the family.

Soar Mill Cove has food that is well priced and really delicious, certainly when we come again we will eat in rather than venture out.

Soar Mill Cove Hotel –  The best bits:

We loved the location of Soar Mill Cove. It’s a hotel to reinvigorate you and get away from the stresses of day-to-day life. The staff here are lovely – a really great mix of friendly and helpful without being overbearing.

I love how they greet guests with a cream tea! A perfect start to a Devon break.

Looking down over the sea really is so nice for any season and I can see why people return time after time. We can’t wait to.

Soar Mill Cove Hotel – Worth Bearing in Mind

There is WiFi in the hotel but it is patchy the further away from reception you roam. Our bedroom was the furthest away and it came in and out – fine for a weekend getting away from it all but if you had work to do you’d have to sit in the main lounge.

Soar Mill Cove Hotel – Child Friendly?

Very. Aside from the warm welcome that children get at Soar Mill Cove there are so many great features here that will make this an ideal hotel for families. From the fabulous spring fed salt water swimming pool, heated to a luxurious 86 degrees,

to a children’s games room in the grounds, and plenty of classic board games in the lounge. There’s a children’s tea between 5 and 6 or they are very welcome to join parents for the regular dinner, with their own menu or simplified dishes from the main menu.

For summer days there is a little beach five minutes down the lane complete with rockpools, sand and plenty of spots to explore. It really is idyllic.
