Temple Tree Resort & Spa, Langkawi, Malaysia review.

The beautiful island of Langkawi is rich in history and colour. It’s a wonderful place to visit to soak up the real local culture with a bit of added luxury when you need it.

We stayed at Temple Tree Resort as our first stop on our travels around the island. Which was an absolutely magical place to stay.

Not only do they rescue and restore Malay and indigenous houses from across the country, but they also rescue cats. Could it get any better?!

Just south of Langkawi airport, Temple Tree, and its sister boutique resort of Bon Ton contain the most wonderful collection of houses rescued from across the country.

Bon Ton has eight restored Malay stilt houses. While Temple Tree rescues homes from across Malaysia and carefully transports them, piece by piece to Langkawi.

There are a variety of different homes. All beautifully restored and in various sizes.

From a Chinese house to Malay and Indian-styled properties.

Temple Tree Resort, Langkawi, Malaysia – Sleeps:

We stayed in a colonial-style shop house which was absolutely gorgeous.

This was once a large, stately home which came from Georgetown, Penang.

It was built in the 1920s by goldsmith traders who would have been very wealthy. They built the house with some western features such as cornicing, tiled floors and a fish scale design canopy over the porch.

Today it can be rented in five parts or for a single group.

We stayed in the upstairs apartment. This had a large central space that had an extra bed for our youngest.

And a fantastic large wooden bathtub which our children adored taking baths in.

There was a double bedroom, which like everywhere in the building was full of antique interiors. With clean white wooden walls.

And a twin bedroom.

Each bedroom was linked through to its own bathroom with modern loo (thankfully!) and a shower.

There was then a large living area that ran the length of the space. With tables, chairs, a fridge and more gorgeous interiors.

It was so atmospheric walking through on the creaking floors.

I loved the shutters all around. And when the monsoon rains thundered overhead it was wonderful to sit inside this space and relax. The fans keeping us cool. While the children peeped outside at the big drops of rain falling from the sky.

All of our accommodation was above a large central room that was communal to the other residences in the colonial house. This had a large dining table and lots of chairs to sit and relax in.

Food:

We loved breakfast at the Temple Tree Resort. It was delivered to the room the evening before to put in the fridge.

We had yoghurts, breads and jam, cake, biscuits, fruit, and juices. And there was coffee to make too.

It was nice to be able to take our time over breakfast. And sit about in our pyjamas, watching the cats from the windows.

We also ate one evening at the Temple Tree’s restaurant and the food was delicious. Full of flavour and fresh and tasty.

We had Lebanese breads with various dips.

And a salad with tortellini.

While the children tucked in to vegetable fried rice with egg which they loved.

It was wonderful to sit over in the main building as the light started to fade and look around at all the beautiful buildings, lighting up as evening set in.

The Best Bits

This is a totally unique place to stay and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

At every turn, there are beautiful antiques and interior details that make this a stylish and yet at the same time totally authentic stay.

There are some lovely touches too from gorgeous saris to wear during your stay to little bottles of cure-all oils to take away to “remind you of Langkawi”.

And the pineapple and peppermint drink on arrival is just delicious.

Worth Bearing in Mind:

There is patchy WiFi. It’s better if you sit in the main building.

It’s also somewhere to bring your insect repellent as it’s fairly open to the elements. Although there are mosquito nets for all the beds, mosquito coils and we didn’t get bitten at all.

Child Friendly?

Very child-friendly. Our kids adored Temple Tree.

The cats were a big hit – they are all very friendly and very well looked after.

In addition, there are lizards running about outside and the odd frog hopping over the path when the monsoon rains hit. All of which proved a real delight to our children.

There is also a lovely swimming pool on site which always goes down well.

But apart from anything our children really felt that this was somewhere special to stay.

The gasps of “wow” and “this is amazing” hit as soon as they ran in to explore the rooms.

It really is such a special, unique place to stay.
