Our visit to Szechenyi Baths in winter

During our winter trip to Budapest we took a visit to Szechenyi baths.
When we arrived, we were slightly apprehensive about the weather. Snow was lying on the ground and the rain looked like it might get heavier.
But once inside, the atmosphere was cosy and welcoming. The grand corridors and changing areas are full of character, with high ceilings and historic architecture that remind you just how long these baths have been part of Budapest life.

We had booked a private changing cubicle, which I would highly recommend. The cubicle gave us a private space to change and also somewhere secure to store our belongings during our visit. It made the whole experience feel much easier and more relaxed.

Once changed, we headed straight outside towards the famous outdoor pools. Walking through the cold air in a swimsuit felt slightly shocking at first, but the moment we lowered ourselves into the thermal water everything changed.
The warmth of the water was incredible.
Steam curled around the surface of the pool and the historic buildings surrounding the baths looked even more beautiful against the winter sky. People were chatting quietly, relaxing or simply floating in the warm water as the cold air drifted overhead.
It felt wonderfully calm and surprisingly peaceful.
At one point we could feel light rain on our faces while the rest of our bodies stayed perfectly warm in the water. Itโs such an unusual sensation and one that made the experience feel even more memorable.
The pools at Szรฉchenyi Baths

The Szรฉchenyi Baths complex is enormous and includes 18 pools in total, both indoor and outdoor.
The outdoor pools are the highlight, especially in winter.
Outdoor thermal pools – Szechenyi Baths in winter
There are three outdoor pools:
- a large swimming pool
- a thermal relaxation pool
- a whirlpool-style pool
The thermal pools stay between 36โ38ยฐC, which feels wonderfully warm when the air temperature is close to freezing.
One of the most iconic sights at Szรฉchenyi is watching locals playing chess in the water. Regular visitors bring floating chess boards and spend hours chatting and playing games while soaking in the warm thermal water.
Indoor baths
Inside the complex youโll find a variety of smaller thermal pools with different temperatures.
These indoor baths range from cooler pools to very warm ones and include saunas, steam rooms and relaxation areas. Itโs easy to spend several hours moving between pools and enjoying the different temperatures.

Choose a cabin rather than a locker
A private cabin (cubicle) is well worth the extra cost. It gives you a comfortable space to change and somewhere secure to leave your belongings.
Bring flip flops
The floors around the baths can be slippery, so flip flops or pool shoes are very useful. They’re also mandatory around the pools and can cost a lot to rent or buy.
Bring a towel and robe
Walking between indoor areas and outdoor pools in winter can feel chilly. A towel or robe makes moving between pools much more comfortable.
Visit earlier in the day
Morning visits tend to be quieter than afternoons or evenings.
What it feels like to swim in Budapest thermal baths in winter

One of the most surprising things about visiting thermal baths in winter is how comfortable it actually feels.
Even when the air temperature is low, the water remains beautifully warm. The contrast between the warm water and the cool air creates an experience that feels both relaxing and invigorating.
Your body stays warm while your face and hair feel the crisp winter air. Steam drifts across the water and the historic architecture of the baths looks particularly atmospheric against a grey winter sky.
For us, visiting Szรฉchenyi Baths in winter felt like one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Budapest.
Is Szรฉchenyi Baths suitable for families?
While visiting the baths is a fantastic experience, itโs worth noting that Szรฉchenyi Baths are not designed for young children.
The minimum age for entry is typically 14 years old, which means the baths are better suited to teenagers and adults rather than families with younger kids.
However, for older teenagers the experience can still be very enjoyable, especially after a day exploring Budapest. My three (aged 14, 16 and 19) thought it was absolutely wonderful. Bobbing about in the very warm water was a highlight of the trip for them.
Is winter the best time to visit Szรฉchenyi Baths?

After visiting ourselves, I would absolutely say yes.
Winter adds a magical atmosphere that you simply donโt get in summer. Snow, steam and historic architecture combine to create one of the most memorable spa experiences in Europe.
Cold weather also often means fewer crowds, which makes the experience even more enjoyable.
Sinking into warm thermal water while snowflakes fall around you is something youโll remember long after your trip to Budapest is over.
