The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, Langkawi Island, Malaysia – our review

A wonderful stay at the Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, Langkawi Island, Malaysia

Our review of a stay at the Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, Langkawi Island, Malaysia with kids. At the very north-western tip of Malaysia as it meets Thailand, and 30 kilometres out to sea sits the archipelago of Langkawi. A group of over a hundred islands. The main island of Langkawi is home to around sixty thousand people. It is one of only five islands in the group which are inhabited. If you’re searching for one of the best family resorts in Langkawi, a luxury beachfront hotel in Malaysia, or wondering where to stay in Langkawi with kids, The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa is a destination that deserves serious consideration. We visited as part of a Malaysia family holiday. In this detailed Westin Langkawi review, we share exactly what it’s like to stay here as a family – from rooms and pools to restaurants, beaches and kidsโ€™ activities.

The island is a destination which promises a real retreat for many travellers coming to Malaysia. It sits in the cool clear Andaman Sea and boasts rainforest and stunning vistas. There’s plenty of wildlife too, including groups of monkeys and primates. Although criss-crossed with a good transport network and roads, Langkawi retains a beautiful simplicity. It delivers a wonderful experience for those seeking a truly tropical getaway. Langkawi is also a duty-free island, which makes it particularly attractive for travellers looking to enjoy good food, shopping and luxury resorts without the higher prices often found elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Many visitors choose Langkawi as part of a wider Malaysia itinerary, combining time in Kuala Lumpur or Penang with a relaxing beach break.

For families, Langkawi is especially appealing thanks to its calm beaches, wildlife experiences, cable car rides and island-hopping tours. Choosing the right resort is key, and The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa stands out as one of the top luxury family hotels on the island.

When researching the best resorts in Langkawi for families, The Westin consistently appears among the top choices. Located close to Kuah town yet set within its own peaceful grounds, it offers a balance between accessibility and tranquillity that works well for families.

The private beachfront location means you can enjoy the sea without crowds, while the multiple swimming pools ensure children of all ages have somewhere safe to play. Parents, meanwhile, can enjoy the spa, restaurants and ocean views that make this feel like a relaxing escape.

Another big advantage is the size of the resort. It feels spacious rather than crowded, and the layout allows families to spread out while still enjoying all the facilities.

I felt my breath suddenly taken away as I stepped through the door of the suite apartment for the first time. We had arrived after travelling across the island and we were all looking forward to a time to relax. I knew instantly this was the place to do it.

Suite

The white spacious lounge led onto an equally impressive balcony on which a group of Dusky Leaf monkeys were sat. Almost like they were our welcoming party. I wasn’t sure where to look, or how to take it all in. It was a beautiful sight with babies clutching on to mothers and all of them happily hanging out.

It was an incredible start to our time at the resort.

The apartment led off in two directions. On one side was the children’s room each with two large inviting and comfortable beds. And a well-equipped en-suite.

In the other direction was a kitchen, a huge en-suite with dressing room.

There was an incredible bedroom with views of the private beach, and a separate study beyond.

Main bedroom

It was absolutely stunning throughout.

The lounge was perfect for us to relax in with views of the Andaman Sea and a dining area alongside.

It would be the perfect spot to entertain guests. Yet we were happy to have the Dusky Leaf monkeys as our only visitors, albeit briefly. I loved how they looked so studious with the white rings around their eyes looking like they were wearing glasses.

The hotel has a selection of rooms to suit all budgets from Superior and Premium Rooms to suites like ours. And also stunning private villas with uninterrupted views of the waves lapping at the beach.

Much of the resort is open plan and even the huge reception area is a place you will want to spend time in. It’s so warm, welcoming and airy. We grabbed a drink at the bar next to the reception. And sat overlooking the pools and out to the sea and the islands making up the archipelago beyond.

It’s a place it would be almost impossible to feel stressed in.

Pool

The children are very well catered for with a sweet kids club with the most delightful staff. The club is a short walk from the reception and situated near to the resort’s shop and fitness studio.

Our children loved going here as the relaxed and friendly attitude in the kids club made them feel at home.

There were craft sessions, such as mug decorating as well as plenty of games to play and enjoy.

The resort is set out in such a way that you’ll find yourself taking a gentle stroll from one area to the next. The walks are never a great distance, but if you want to grab a lift in a hotel buggy the staff are always keen to help.

The layout really does help make the resort feel less busy and more chilled.

If you want to get a bit more active, there are tennis courts on-site. There are also lots of trips and excursions and a lovely range of water sports all available from the beach.

We took a sea kayak and pedalo out into the warm and clear sea. It was a perfect way to explore the coastline and watch the tiny fishing boats heading out to sea.

The hotel also organises island hopping trips and a number of different sea-based activities.

There are a total of four different pools at the resort which all had their own different style. We loved the large spacious toddler pool where we could watch our youngest paddle safely. And our oldest two fell in love with both the Ocean Rock pool with its rushing waterfalls.

There was also an infinity pool complete with a swim-up bar where freshly picked coconuts werethe order of the day.

The fourth pool is tucked discreetly away at the Heavenly Spa. Again a short stroll from the main hotel complex.

Mr Globalmouse took the chance to try an energising Aspire massage at the Spa. With natural aromatherapy oils and a range of massage techniques, it’s varied to suit your personal preferences. The setting is absolutely wonderful. Calm and serene in a stunning wood and glass interior.

There are a host of other treatments offered with skin care and spa services, as well as body, bath and beauty treatments.

There are a total of six restaurants dotted around the resort. All of which have their own distinct themes and flavours.

There’s a mixture of different cuisines on offer from Malaysian, other Asian offerings, through to Arabic and international dishes.

Breakfast

The breakfast at the Westin Langkawi Resort was a lovely spread, again covering a range of cuisines and tastes. I thought the range of buffet foods was great. And the children loved being able to order fresh pancakes and waffles.

There is a hot menu and delicious pastries too.

My personal favourite from breakfast was being able to visit the “Westin Fresh by the Juicery” bar. Here a wonderful array of colourful healthy juices and smoothies are whipped up to revitalise you for the day.

Seasonal Tastes restaurant

We had a delicious lunch at the Seasonal Tastes Restaurant where we tucked in to chilli prawns.

While the children gobbled down pizzas and we also feasted on bento boxes of houmus and salad.

Tide restaurant at The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, Langkawi Island, Malaysia

The resort’s Tide restaurant offers a mix of Malaysian and International dishes. This was perfect for us as a family as we were able to give the children a taste of different foods and also have choices which they were more familiar with.

I loved the vegetarian Pad Thai.

While my eight-year-old son tried his first yellow curry and immediately became a curry convert which I am overjoyed at.

This is a truly wonderful hotel. It has to be one of the best resorts to stay in Langkawi which offers a perfect place for all the family to unwind.

There’s so much to explore on Langkawi island and it’s a perfect spot to head out and enjoy the rest of the island.

Equally, it’s the absolute best place to simply stretch out and enjoy the incredible views and let any stresses drift away.

For families travelling with children of different ages, this resort works particularly well. Younger children will love the shallow pools and beach access, while older children can enjoy water sports, kidsโ€™ club activities and excursions beyond the resort.

Parents will also appreciate the thoughtful touches that make travelling easier – from buggy transport around the resort to helpful staff and family-friendly dining options.ย

We could have happily spent our whole break here and I really look forward to returning at some point in the future.

While the resort itself offers plenty to keep families entertained, Langkawi island is full of memorable experiences worth exploring. Staying at The Westin gives you a convenient base to enjoy some of the islandโ€™s most popular attractions.

Langkawi SkyCab and Sky Bridge
One of the most famous attractions on the island is the Langkawi SkyCab cable car. This thrilling ride takes you high above the rainforest to the Sky Bridge, where the views across the Andaman Sea are spectacular. Children often love the sense of adventure and the chance to see the island from above.

Island hopping tours
Island hopping is one of the most popular activities in Langkawi. These tours often include stops at Dayang Bunting Island (known for its freshwater lake), eagle watching and snorkelling opportunities. Many tours depart from jetties close to the resort.

Langkawi Wildlife Park
Families travelling with younger children may enjoy a visit to Langkawi Wildlife Park, where kids can feed birds and get up close to animals in a safe environment.

Night markets in Langkawi
Langkawiโ€™s rotating night markets are a brilliant way to sample local street food and experience Malaysian culture. They are affordable, lively and offer a huge variety of dishes for adventurous eaters.
